Behind the Scenes: Spies in Disguise in Theaters This Christmas

The holiday season is in full effect.  Not sure what to give? How about the gift of the movies? Take a break from the unwrapping and head to your local theater to see Spies in Disguise. Not too long ago I was invited to Greenwich CT to get a sneak peek of the animated film coming to life at Blue Sky Studios.

Did you know that the whole process of animated films can take years?  Even while we were visiting the animation artists were still editing and add last-minute effects to the film. I wish I was able to take tons of photos to share with you however it is all top secret. Almost like we were spies as well as being able to get the inside scoop and hear from the directive team.

SPIES IN DISGUISE

Super spy Lance Sterling (Will Smith) and scientist Walter Beckett (Tom Holland) are almost exact opposites. Lance is smooth, suave and debonair. Walter is … not. But when events take an unexpected turn, this unlikely duo is forced to team up for the ultimate mission that will require an almost impossible disguise – transforming Lance into the brave, fierce, majestic… pigeon. Walter and Lance suddenly have to work as a team, or the whole world is in peril. “Spies in Disguise” flies into theaters this Christmas.

 

Director Troy Quane Gives us the inside scoop.

Director of the film  Troy Quane was on site to give us a little background of the film an about Lance. Lance is the spy that everyone knows by name but he also leaves a mess everywhere when completing a mission but does it in style. He even has his own soundtrack being played when entering the scene. Lance could be considered somewhat of a flawed hero. He isn’t always the good guy nor is he a bad guy.  We need to understand what defines these characteristics. We can all be the change that needs to take place.

Spies in Disguise Drive in style with the Audi RSQ E-Tron

Everything about him is done with sophistication, even the vehicle he drives is the cream of the crop
of cars.  I know that after seeing just a snippet of the film that we will all want to be driving Lance’s vehicle. Sad news to report it does not exist. This vehicle was designed just for the film. The Audi RSQ E-Tron was designed from the ground up.
It offers voice activation a steering wheel like a plane.  At some points in the film, it needs to be drivable for a pigeon. ( Don’t want to ruin the whole movie)  The electric car had to have certain specifications but also wanted to be a realistic and not futuristic electric car. Having Audi on board was not a business decision but more of a partnership. This is a real-world car designed strictly for animation. 
Worlds collide when gadget guy Walter Beckett, voiced by Tom Holland is being sought out by Lance for assistance. Little does he know what he is getting into when he knocks on Walters’s door.   This super optimistic socially awkward young man lives in the same home that he grew up in, he has been creating gadgets and gizmos ever since he was a little boy.  Keeping everyone safe has been his goal for quite some time, with his mother being a police officer.
Though you might not think it, there are similarities between the two. Lance and Walter might not be the ideal Spy team. But when the books smarts and street smarts come together you are getting the best of both worlds.
The commonality being alone and working alone is even more unique with Lance’s “I fly solo”  catchphrase.

Color Spectrum sets the tone for the scenes.

You might not notice it but now after reading this, you will want to take notice.  This movie is like a color spectrum with each scene showcasing an array of colors to depict the mood with trust vs. betrayal.  Scenes with red, orange and yellow depict family, trust, and teamwork. Those with blues, blacks, and purples depict betrayal, isolation, and danger especially when the villains come into play.   Practical light is then used to define the spaces. 

 

First Spy Movie for Kids

Think of Spies in Disguise as the first spy movie to introduce children too. They will have a whole new outlook on their surroundings.  What makes the kids laugh? Could a pigeon be a spy?  Maybe they are, who knows. 
Your favorite spy movies are all wrapped into one with a family-friendly theme. The messaging is right in this film and well will learn something no matter what age.  Spies In Disguise is a grounded reality in a stylized world without feeling too “filmy”.
