Over the last few years, I have worked with my students to practice mindfulness to help them feel calm and focused in the classroom.
Even though I know that these strategies are a valuable tool for my students, I often neglect time for self care for myself. As a teacher, I realize the importance of practicing self care as not only does it help me, it also helps me be the best version of me with my students.
I knew I wanted to focus on an exercise that I could easily incorporate into my day to support my mental well being.
I thought that Mindful Breathing for Adults would be the perfect activity to help me decompress, breathe and feel less stress. There are moments throughout the day when I can feel completely overwhelmed and focusing on mindful breathing can support me. It only takes a few minutes and can make a big difference.
Mindful Breathing for Adults is a great to do at any time of day. I decided to do this outside during lunch one day and outside after school on another. With our warm weather days starting to be numbered, I want to enjoy the beauty of a nature on a crisp fall day. You can easily do this in the classroom too.
It is amazing that by taking about 5 minutes to relax your body and focus on breathing, you can feel uplifted. While practicing breathing, it is natural for your mind to wander off.
Research shows that teachers who practice mindfulness for just a few weeks report a range of positive outcomes, including a decrease in burnout, stress, anxiety, and depression. They also experience a range of physical health benefits, including better sleep quality.
When practicing mindfulness and mindful breathing, one will begin to notice a decrease in burnout, stress, anxiety, and depression. As teachers, it is important to take care of ourselves so that we can be the best we can be in front of our students.
Calling all of my fellow educators!

I definitely need to try this. I’m not a teacher, only an aide but some days I do get really overwhelmed. Thanks for such great content!
I think we all need to stop everything and start doing nothing, just sit, be still and don’t think. Allowing the surrounding energy to be absorbed and the body and mind and sound to be replenished.

I have heard of mindful breathing and it sort of reminds me of the way we often tell ourselves ‘go to your happy place.’ Both ask you to just go inward and meditate on something happy or just breathing.
