Great Northern Catskills is, well, great. New York is a busy place and this city girl needs an escape to enjoy all of the beauty that our beautiful state has to offer. Have you ever been to the Greater Catskills area? My family and I had not and this is definitely an area that we would love to explore again.
For a weekend getaway, The Thompson House hosted our weekend visit to explore the region together. Located in Windham, NY, The Thompson House offers breathtaking views, family activities and a return to a time of being unplugged. No iPads, devices or phones needed as we enjoyed classic family games and good quality bonding time.
Enjoying the Great Northern Catskills Area
With beautiful skies upon us and the threat of rain later in the day, we decided to go out and explore. Hospitality is key at The Thompson House and they suggested that we visit the Catskills State Hiking Trail and Kaaterskill Falls. As newbie hikers, we did not know what was in store for us, but we found comfort in knowing that if it was too much, we could keep our visit to the Viewing Platform.
After enjoying the beautiful views from the platform, we decided to be adventurous and hike down to the bottom of the falls. Kaaterskill Falls is the highest cascading waterfall in New York State.
Hiking has its challenges but our final destination was well worth the experience. Kaaterskill Falls is a two-stage waterfall on Spruce Creek in the eastern Catskill Mountains of New York, between the hamlets of Haines Falls and Palenville in Greene County. We climbed to both stages and enjoyed some quality family time relaxing and enjoying the beauty of it all.
As a novice hiker, I was happy to see rangers at all different points in our journey offering advice to hikers were available in case someone needed assistance.
After a busy day of hiking, it was time for some respite back at The Thompson House. Shuffleboard, croquet, bocce and volleyball were some fun activities that we tried outdoors. It was great to see other guests and their families enjoying the grounds too. We learned that many are return guests and come back with their families year after year.
Learning a new skill makes me so happy! I love that she had time to just enjoy the outdoors and breathe in fresh air.
Mini golf was by far a favorite. It is one of those activities that requires you to focus while enjoying lots of laughs with your family.
In addition to fun outdoor activities, The Thompson House also has indoor fun in the recreation area too.
The Thompson House also has a meal plan that serves breakfast and dinner. It was a great way to start our day as well as end our day together as a family.
We were pleasantly surprised when this dessert tray came by after our meal. The girls and I could not decide! So many yummy options.
With a view of the mountains from our room, it gave you the feeling of being one with nature, I hope that our travels bring us to the Greater Catskills region again!
