What happens when 30 women from across the country come to together for A Girls Guide To Cars Conference?

They learn to drive faster, smarter and have tons of fun behind the wheel of new luxury cars.  The highlight of this trip to Palm Springs California was heading to the BMW Driving Experience.     We were able to partake in a mini version of the One- Day M School. I was invited to attend this conference and enjoy the luxury of being in Palm Springs CA while learning from the best in the auto industry.

 

BMW Performance Driving School

I was ready to learn and eager to get behind the wheel.  But first, you have to hit the classroom.  This set up is designed to instill our knowledge of driving all while reminding us about safety, vision, control, proper seating positions and vehicle capabilities. You might think you know it all and wonder why you have to spend time in the classroom.  Where else can you learn from experienced instructors and race car drivers?

It is important to pay attention, there is so much to go over and often times we neglect the basics with our everyday driving. Think of this an enhanced refresher for Driver’s ED.  

Always pay attention to the road in front of you and look as far ahead as you can.  When seated correctly and arms at 90 degrees and hands placed on the wheel at 9 and 3 you will sitting in the lap of luxury.

When taking turns don’t hug the right side, stay to the left and then to the right this will allow for less braking and taking control of the turn.  You don’t want to overshoot it, follow the markings and it will be a successful turn.

Once we were out of the classroom, it was time to get behind the wheel. With the rush of adrenaline knowing we were going to test our limits at high speeds, palms were getting sweaty and we knew we were in for a chance of a lifetime while partaking in the driving modules.

 

First up we learned the ins and outs of cornering through the entry, following the apex and exiting the course.  As we alternated between being the driver and passenger in the elite line up of BMW’s. I was now in control of the ultimate driving machine and boy did it feel good.  With vehicles ranging from the 2,3,4 series and the x series available of our fingertips, everyone was able to test drive each of them.

While at many events there is always a bit of friendly competition.  So of course, we were next up for timed laps. The pressure was on to see who could complete the laps while stopping in the box in record time.   Sorry to say it was not me and I am ok with that.  All that counts is that I went faster and faster each time to improve and learn from each lap that was made.

 

Think of how fast you drive in your own car on a daily basis.  Maybe you are pushing speeds of 70+.  For my normal commute in traffic every day I am lucky if I can get over 50mph.  Now it was time for some lead follows, think of driving at the BMW Racetrack as the opportunity to go to speeds that you have never reached before.  When your instructor says floor it, you push that right foot down further than you have before and watch the number increase as you hit 80, 90, 100 and 120.
