What I Learned in our Interview with Ewan McGregor about Christopher Robin

When Ewan McGregor entered the room, you could tell he was just as excited as we were to be there talking about his latest movie, Christopher Robin.

Ewan started off our time together sharing how he and the director, Marc Forster are good friends. They first worked together on the film Stay (2005). He was with Marc during times of the post production process and ADR.

 

Ewan was inspired to be a part of the film by how Marc described his vision and what he imagined the movie would be like.

When asked about his favorite character, he shared that he was partial to all of them.  “Eeyore is funny and glum. Kanga was lovely.” What impressed me the most was the way that Ewan spoke of the young actors that made working with the stuffed animals possible.

 

He shared that it was a “brilliant thing”. The young actors were right out of drama school.  They were young and enthusiastic while they read lines and played in the scenes. The “stuffies” (stuffed animals) actor would hold and move around a little bit while they played the scene.

Then, as it came time for visual effects, the stuffies became grey versions of the animals with no hair, to a Pooh without a head and just a tummy, then finally, an antenna with light on top.  He really felt that they were great actors to ad lib with and that their input really helped as they were so enthusiastic.

 

 

When speaking about being a father in this movie, Ewan reminded us that the time period was different then.  Fathers were at war or at times not present at home because of work.  It made him think of his dad and his childhood.  He sees the difference and how now, he is very close with his own daughters.

When speaking of his daughter Madeline Robin played by Bronte Carmichael in the film, Ewan shared that she is lovely and a great actor.  She is a little girl and not a starlet so it was very difficult to be cold in certain scenes.

When asked how will you remember this movie since you have been in so many , Ewan shared that the “atmosphere was lovely. Marc (Forster)is collaborative. He allows you to feel like you have a lot of room.”

The way in which they filmed Christopher Robin, Ewan said that it feels really real as if you talking to Pooh Creatures.

Listening to Ewan McGregor share the joy that he felt filming this movie, I did get a little teary-eyed when he said “Silly Old Bear” to us.  He truly is the perfect grown up Christopher Robin.

It was a delight and joy to learn about Christopher Robin through the eyes of Ewan McGregor.
