From the minute he walked in the room for our #ChristopherRobinEvent interview, Jim Cummings was an absolute delight. Listening to his voice become “Winnie the Pooh” & “Tigger” made you feel as if they were in the room with you.
When asked about switching voices, Cummings shared that switching voices while recording comes natural to him. We were delighted to here him as he spoke to us in Pooh and Tigger voices to show how he does it.
On Being Winnie the Pooh
It was great to listen to Cummings speak about being in the Christopher Robin movie.
When asked, “How does it feel to bring Winnie the Pooh to life again?”
“Well, he’s been around with me for a long time. And it feels great. And I love the reimagining, I love you know, oh my goodness, Mark’s vision is sublime.”
“…. it just feels great you know, to be associated with such a beautiful, a beautiful franchise. It’s not a franchise to me. What am I trying to say? It’s a universe, sort of. You know, the hundred-acre wood, everybody knows about it and everybody knows all those characters and they have a sweet spot in everybody’s hearts and it’s an honor. It’s a privilege to bring them forward to new generations. I’ve jokingly said, you know, ‘Winnie the Pooh generation is every three and a half years because brand new set of Pooh fans.’
So true! New Winnie the Pooh fans are being born each day!
On How People Respond to Pooh’s voice
I was so glad that we addressed this during the interview. Listening to Pooh’s voice brings back such feelings of nostalgia for me.
Cummings shared, “I think almost no matter how old you are, there’s a certain feeling of it’s a pipeline to you at five. You know, or eight years old, it just seems like, ‘oh gosh, that reminds me of when I was,’ you know, and then you’re going, ‘oh, that’s, boy those were good times, oh say something again.’ You know, and it, it’s just a comfort. I think it’s like audio comfort, you know.
On His Favorite Pooh Quote
The wonderful thing about Pooh is that he says such extraordinary simple things. People have pondered his insightful thoughts through the years. So when Cummings used the term “Pooh logic”, I completely resonated with this idea.
As for the quote, he answered with the Disney quote, “You are braver than you believe, stronger than you seem, and smarter than you think.”
On Doing Impressions as a Child
One often wonders where voice talent like this comes from and Cummings shared what he was like and he shared the voices with us as well.
“Oh, yeah, I was very annoying. God, I just, they just hated me and I, I cringe when I think of it. You know, like.., rest her soul my Aunt Grace, for all the world, she just sounded like she was a boxer.” and then the ad lib in different voices after was priceless.
During our interview, we laughed and enjoyed our times with Jim Cummings. At the end, he was gracious and took a photo with all of us.
