Have you seen Coco yet? What are you waiting for? There are so many wonderful things about Disney Pixar’s Coco and the music is definitely one of them.
Disney Pixar’s Coco shares the story of Miguel and his love for music. Unfortunately, his family has forbidden music and it makes it hard for him to pursue his dream.
In August, I was invited by Disney on an all expense paid trip to San Francisco to visit Pixar Studios and learn more about the movie Coco for the #PixarCocoEvent.

Coco’s music finds inspiration in a variety of styles of Mexican music, not just the traditional mariachi. Lots of sounds instead of just traditional mariachi. Camilo Lara was the Cultural Musical Consultant. He shared how they wanted the music to feel real and authentic.
Germaine Franco shared that some of the musicians made their own instruments. After visiting Mexico, they brought the bands into the studio to create the sound that we love in the movie.
Composer Michael Giacchino had watched an early version of the film. He wanted to connect the music to the emotions being felt by the characters. To do this, they brought in special indigenous instruments to create the authentic sounded needed for the movie.

Co Director Adrian Molina shared that they wanted the movie to have all original songs. In the movie, Miguel uses music to forge his way. They wanted to create musical moments that would help to create the storytelling moment.

Written by Kristen Anderson-Lopez & Robert Lopez, songwriters of our favorite Frozen songs, “Remember Me” was able to express the star power of Ernesto de la Cruz from the golden age of Mexican Cinema. “Remember Me” is like a happy birthday song huge holiday meets Mexico.
Adrian Molina shared how important it is to be remembered and have someone remember you. This is one of the parts of the movie that can bring tears to your eyes as you learn the truth of Ernesto de la Cruz and Miguel’s family.

My niece saw Coco in theaters and loved it. She is already hooked on the music.

Thats neat that indigenous instruments were used. I love that white guitar! I see the musician is playing one much like it. I bet the music is awesome. We havent seen it yet.

I’m impressed they went to such lengths for authenticity – the effort wouldn’t be obvious to the casual moviegoer but the extra care always pays off.
