This post is part of a sponsored campaign for Family Volunteer Day. I received compensation for my participation, but my review and opinions are my own.
Have you heard of Family Volunteer Day?
This was new to me and I am so glad that I found out more. We took a look at the list of DIY Projects from the Family Volunteer Day website and we chose Food Drive. The food drive resonated with us and it gave us a chance to talk about hunger and how we can help others as a family.
We decided to help our elementary school kick off the schoolwide Food Drive this year. All of the donations will be going to a local soup kitchen.
To get ready, we gathered materials that we would need.
Then, it was time to make posters. These posters will let the school know what to soup kitchen needs and wants this holiday season.
A project like this is great because all ages can get involved. Getting into the spirit and making decorations makes it easy for everyone to do their part.
What better way to help than by making hand turkey to get into the giving spirit.
Then, we labeled some of the boxes that will be used so it will be clear where the donations need to be placed at school.
We started to gather goods in our house and we asked our nearby neighbors. Within seconds, our two boxes almost became full.
We are now ready to kick off the food drive. Our culminating family event will be to head to the local soup kitchen at the end of the food drive with all of our donations.
Family Volunteer Day, held annually on the Saturday before Thanksgiving and now in its 26th year, is a day of service that demonstrates and celebrates the power of families who volunteer together, supporting their neighbors and neighborhoods. Taking place this year on November 19, Family Volunteer Day is powered by generationOn, the youth division of Points of Light, the largest organization in the world dedicated to volunteer service, and sponsored by The Walt Disney Company.
Now it is your turn! Head to generationOn website to find projects to do as a family on Family Volunteer Day. What project do you think you would do?

I like this idea. I like being able to give back as a family. My son and his fellow band students run a food drive every year. It is a wonderful thing to see kids helping.
I think giving back is such an important idea to keep a community whole. We too give back in many different ways. My high schooler has to volunteer as part of her diploma program too. Such a great time of year to think of others.
I had never heard of family volunteer day. We volunteer together a number of times each year at the local animal shelter! Guess we invented the holiday! 😉
What a great thing to get family involved in. I think it is important that children know there are always those who have issues getting food on the table.
I love how you have gotten your entire family involved in the project. I am very involved in community groups and try to get even my young kids to give back in ways that they can understand.
We have volunteered as a family over the years and each of us found it rewarding and fun.
I so want to do this! I will be in Michigan that day, but I am going to make sure that my family is prepared to participate. My daughter is very service-minded and does service projects already, so this fits in great with what we do as a family. Thank you!
This sounds like a grear program to participate in with your family. I love that there are suggestions on the site.
I actually hadn’t heard about this. It sounds like a great idea & an excellent way to show kids how you want them to be rather than just lecturing.
I so want to do this! What a wonderful idea!!! And I love that your whole family got involved!
Way to go!!!
