How You Can Empower Girls with Education all Around the World

There are some words that stick in your head and you use them to guide your life in all aspects.  About 15 years ago, our school took on the motto “Together we can make a difference.” As a teacher, I used it in my class as a way of getting along as well as a way of helping others.  Now that I am a mom of three beautifully smart daughters, I want them to be socially conscious citizens who realize that there is a big world around them.

Education can be something that we take for granted and I didn’t know if my girls were aware of how different it is for some around the world. For some girls, school is just a dream. Hunger, lower social status, chores, early marriage, threats to safety, poor sanitation and extreme poverty are barriers than prevent 100 million girls around the world from receiving the education they deserve.

To help them better understand, I shared with them the story of Joyce.

joyce_2

Work hard.

Joyce, 13, lives in Mukuru Kwa Reuben slum in Nairobi, Kenya with her mother and threeyounger siblings. Although her father lives in the neighborhood, he does not support her or heramily. Shes enrolled in the eighth grade, but her days don’t look like most middle schoolers in the US.
She wakes up at 4 a.m. to make breakfast for her family and get hersiblings ready forschool. She then ushers everyone to neighboring school before running off to her own class.  I will work very hard in school so that I am successful and even if my father does not support  me and my siblings with school fees, I will still work so hard to achieve my goals, she says confidently.
joyce_1

I like school because it will make me achieve my goals.

Education inspires me work hard to be able to help my family to get out of the slum one day.
Although there are many differences that my 10 and 13 year olds experience, they also have many similarities.

No matter where in the world you are, children want to learn.  They have the will and the desire even it is a challenge.

CARE, a global humanitarian organization that fights poverty by empowering girls and women.  As a teacher and mother, I beliebe that education helps fight poverty all over the world.  The more you stay in school, the better your life becomes.  Not only does it help you, but it helps future generations of your family too.

When you invest in education, children will pay it forward. Equipped with knowledge and confidence, they will grow up to lead healthier, more productive lives.

As a mother of three girls I am saddened to think that there are other little girls who won’t have as bright of a future because of where they live. You would think that in 2016 education wouldn’t be something so hard to have access too. I tell my kids daily that we should never take anything for granted because you don’t know what the future may hold.

So happy to kick off the holiday season with @macy So happy to kick off the holiday season with @macys and Santa! Last night, we took the train into the city to preview #Macys #Santaland I have to say it was quite magical. Although my youngest was 12, Santa was able to connect to her and put us all in the holiday spirit.

I believe. I believe….

My mom also came with us. We started talking and I think it was almost 40 years ago that she took us to visit Santa at Macys. I was so happy to visit Santa with her and my youngest for a three generation experience.

Don’t forget to check out the beautiful window displays as you enjoy all of #NYC during the holidays!

#ad Mental health isn’t talked about enough, but #ad Mental health isn’t talked about enough, but 1 in 5 adults suffer from mental illness and disorders today.

Let’s reduce the stigma by opening up the conversation in the classroom and at home.
As a teacher and a mom of 3, I know how important it is to be there and be a good listener.

Conversations are super important. It’s never too early (or too late) to have these conversations with your students or your own children.

Operation Conversation is a check-in on kids’ mental health. When we start simple habits of conversations, we can learn about concerns or problems our students are dealing with, help them problem solve, and build their confidence for life’s difficult moments.

Teachers can help to destigmatize mental health starting in their own classrooms by talking to their students about mental health using a free deck of conversation starter cards. Parents can also use these cards to support good conversations while at home. I know as a mom, I can use all the help I can get.

#Giveaway Alert!
I have 5 decks of Conversation Starter Decks of cards to give away to 5 lucky winners to help you get the conversation flowing!

To enter:
1. Comment on this post as to why you would love the conversation starter deck of cards.

New York state has so many wonderful places to be New York state has so many wonderful places to be a part of . From the bright lights of NYC, to quiet places of respite in its parks and wooded areas. Time to walk, hike and reflect. Being active and busy is something that I hope my teens learn from and something we can do together to enjoy all the beauty and nature it has to offer while keeping NY tobacco free. Did you know that our oldest generation of smokers are now dying? After them, you have me and a very large group of people who do not smoke at all. So, who’s next? Instead of taking cigarettes off the shelves, the tobacco industry views today’s teens as tomorrow’s customers, using menthol-flavored products to attract and addict kids – and it’s working. More than half (54%) of youth who smoke (ages 12-17 years) use menthol cigarettes. making it easier for kids to start and harder for them to quit. Menthol is not JUST a flavor, it attracts and addicts kids As a teen mom, I am sharing this so we can all take action! Learn more about the impact of Big Tobacco’s manipulative tactics on our communities and how you can take action to help end this injustice.
