Top 5 Ways Travel Helps Me Connect with My Family #TravelforReal #FamilyForward

Traveling as a family can be a challenge for us.  We do go on trip but there are times when we are not all together. When we visit family in North Carolina,  my husband is usually not able to join us.  He works in the restaurant business and it can be a challenge to take time off.

Earlier this summer, we took an overnight to a local resort in New Jersey.  Just spending the two days together as a family of 5 made me realize that we need to do this more often.

Gristina Family 2015

One night away and I wanted more, or should I say needed more time together.

Throughout the year, we have work, school, sports, dance, gymnastics, homework, projects, playdates, birthday parties, camp and family events.  All in all, I enjoy being able to take my girls to events like this but I also need time for our family of 5.

Why?

  1. Memories – Just spending the two days together created lots of laughs and good times.  There were no distractions and we enjoyed the pool and even some time in the arcade together.
  2. Pictures – There has been a lot of talk about getting in the photo with our children. I agree.  But, I have noticed that I do not have many family of 5 pictures.  I have joined the photo or my husband has but then we are only 4.  Travel is a great time to get those photos to document your time together as a family.
  3. Real life connections – I remember hating geography in school.  I didn’t understand it or feel that I had any connections to it.  When I went away to college and my father drove me upstate, all of a sudden it all began to click how it worked.  My father and I started talking about the routes and the best options for getting to our destination. It is my hope that by having discussions about where we are traveling that at an earlier age than I did, they begin to see where we are in this big world.
  4. Relax and Unwind – We all have busy schedules including children. Travel allows us to experience a new place and at the same time, relax and enjoy it.  I want to see as much as I can with my family, but I also know that running from place to place can lead to many cranky moments.  So travel allows us the opportunity to relax and connect with each other.
  5. Would it be fair to say that travel also allows us the time to spend together as a family of 5?  By planning to go to a destination, everyone needs to clear there schedule and be ready to go.  We need to be available to each other.  When home, schedules can change, other events can pull us in different directions and it can be a challenge to be a family unit.  So by planning ahead, I know that we are going to create some lasting memories before we start the new school year.

I am sad to let you know it was a challenge to find photos of the 5 of us together.  I even got my sister involved because I was getting upset.

So glad you made the time. We are in the same boat. In town everyone has an excuse to miss out but getting away really makes the family a family. Glad you did get that one family photo. Last trip I was not in a single one.

Traveling is the best way to bond, my boyfriend’s family took cross country trips as a family and he has been to 49 states, leaving hawaii. For my first birthday he took me on my first cross country trip. We make it a point to go somewhere at least once a year.

I wish I was heading to Family Forward! I’ll admit, The last and only photo I have of my family is from memorial day so I know that feeling of sadness. I love traveling with my family and it helps me connect with them by just being there in the moment.

So happy to kick off the holiday season with @macy So happy to kick off the holiday season with @macys and Santa! Last night, we took the train into the city to preview #Macys #Santaland I have to say it was quite magical. Although my youngest was 12, Santa was able to connect to her and put us all in the holiday spirit.

I believe. I believe….

My mom also came with us. We started talking and I think it was almost 40 years ago that she took us to visit Santa at Macys. I was so happy to visit Santa with her and my youngest for a three generation experience.

Don’t forget to check out the beautiful window displays as you enjoy all of #NYC during the holidays!

#ad Mental health isn’t talked about enough, but #ad Mental health isn’t talked about enough, but 1 in 5 adults suffer from mental illness and disorders today.

Let’s reduce the stigma by opening up the conversation in the classroom and at home.
As a teacher and a mom of 3, I know how important it is to be there and be a good listener.

Conversations are super important. It’s never too early (or too late) to have these conversations with your students or your own children.

Operation Conversation is a check-in on kids’ mental health. When we start simple habits of conversations, we can learn about concerns or problems our students are dealing with, help them problem solve, and build their confidence for life’s difficult moments.

Teachers can help to destigmatize mental health starting in their own classrooms by talking to their students about mental health using a free deck of conversation starter cards. Parents can also use these cards to support good conversations while at home. I know as a mom, I can use all the help I can get.

#Giveaway Alert!
I have 5 decks of Conversation Starter Decks of cards to give away to 5 lucky winners to help you get the conversation flowing!

New York state has so many wonderful places to be New York state has so many wonderful places to be a part of . From the bright lights of NYC, to quiet places of respite in its parks and wooded areas. Time to walk, hike and reflect. Being active and busy is something that I hope my teens learn from and something we can do together to enjoy all the beauty and nature it has to offer while keeping NY tobacco free. Did you know that our oldest generation of smokers are now dying? After them, you have me and a very large group of people who do not smoke at all. So, who’s next? Instead of taking cigarettes off the shelves, the tobacco industry views today’s teens as tomorrow’s customers, using menthol-flavored products to attract and addict kids – and it’s working. More than half (54%) of youth who smoke (ages 12-17 years) use menthol cigarettes. making it easier for kids to start and harder for them to quit. Menthol is not JUST a flavor, it attracts and addicts kids As a teen mom, I am sharing this so we can all take action! Learn more about the impact of Big Tobacco’s manipulative tactics on our communities and how you can take action to help end this injustice. Let’s keep our kids enjoying the wonderful things our state has to offer. Link in bio #NotJustMenthol #TobaccoFreeNYS #ad @tobaccofreenys
