My savvy ladies and I love to go to the theater. We recently saw Can Do Duck The Musical and my girls loved it – especially my 5 year old. The show is interactive and includes moments where audience members can be part of the show. This is always exciting!
Right from the beginning, Dad was seeking advice from the audience. He needed help with his duck story and my daughter jumped right in to offer advice.
The message in Can Do Duck is one that resonates with all ages:
“I say I can, I make a plan, I get right to it, and then I do it!”
The musical follows the story of two families, a human family and a duck family, as they learn to try new things, work as a team and learn to love and accept each other even with their individual differences.
When the ducklings are born at the beginning, they are eager to learn and see the world. Mama Duck is there to guide them and help them make choices.
When my youngest savvy was called out to join them on stage, she jumped at the opportunity. She put on the glasses and started dancing with Sarah.
Each duckling had learning experiences throughout the musical. There were times when other emotions arose. But they made a plan and worked together to solve it.
Can Do Duck always tried his best. When he was down, his brothers and sister supported him and that made all the difference.
In addition to the positive Can Do message, we are left with one final message: You are Loved.
That is the moment where my girls came up and gave me a big hug too.
As a mom, I always take the opportunity to tell my girls I love them. As an educator, I know that is not always the case for all of the students that have come through my classroom. Knowing you are loved is such an important message for all to know.
The musical is based on the successful children’s book series The Can Do Duck that has positively influenced and helped people overcome challenges all over the world.
At the end of the show, the audience was invited up to join the cast on stage for some fun activities and autographs. My youngest still talks about the show.
Before we left, we purchased a rubber duck. When she plays with it she uses what she learned during the show “I say I can, I make a plan, I get right to it, and then I do it!” I love that Can Do Duck The Musical left her with this message and that she continues to use it today.
