Raising Three Savvy Ladies

NYC Lifestyle Blog

August 30, 2014 //

I Am a Highlights Kid! Are you? (Subscription #Giveaway)

I am a Highlights kid!  Even as an adult, I am still learning.  Now, with my three girls, we are a Highlights family.

When I first started reading Highlights magazine as a young child,  I remember my mother telling me about Goofus and Gallant.  She too was a Highlights kid.  As a mom now , I love reading with my children and see how they have made great progress through the years.

As an educator, I love how Highlights has a variety of genre that children should be exposed to – narrative, nonfiction, poetry and plays combined with fun puzzles for a great reading experience.

Highlights Kid -Raising 3 Savvy Ladies

We want our Raising 3 Savvy Ladies readers to remember the Highlights memories too.

Were you one of those kids who rushed to the mailbox each month to see what Goofus and Gallant™ were up to? Did you grumble when you arrived at the dentist office to find someone had already circled the objects in the Hidden Pictures® puzzles? Millions of other people did too! Highlights for Children is celebrating those types of nostalgic memories with “I Was a Highlights Kid,” a Facebook-based campaign filled with fun, interactive games and activities.

We’d love for you to be one of the first to check it out and let us know what you think! Click here or go to www.highlights.com/memories to peruse old covers of the magazine, race your friends to see who can solve the Hidden Pictures puzzles the fastest, and take a fun quiz to determine if you’re more like Goofus or Gallant.

You can also check out the I Was a Highlights Kid video here!

Knowing how important Highlights magazine is for a child, Raising 3 Savvy Ladies has a fun Highlights prize pack for one lucky reader.

One lucky winner will get a Highlights t-shirt and coffee mug of their choice, plus a 1-year subscription to any Highlights magazine. The giveaway is valued at up to $80. US OnlyKeepCalmGallant (1)

We would get to read these at home when my sons were a lot younger and they loved the stories, but the find items were always filled in but the boys loved reading the short stories and me kept a copy on the bathroom for further reading, it was our joke that our bathroom was the library, but all my boys love to read now, the boys would argue over who gets to do the find items, and was a chore keeping the fights down.

So happy to kick off the holiday season with @macy So happy to kick off the holiday season with @macys and Santa! Last night, we took the train into the city to preview #Macys #Santaland I have to say it was quite magical. Although my youngest was 12, Santa was able to connect to her and put us all in the holiday spirit.

I believe. I believe….

My mom also came with us. We started talking and I think it was almost 40 years ago that she took us to visit Santa at Macys. I was so happy to visit Santa with her and my youngest for a three generation experience.

Don’t forget to check out the beautiful window displays as you enjoy all of #NYC during the holidays!

#ad Mental health isn’t talked about enough, but #ad Mental health isn’t talked about enough, but 1 in 5 adults suffer from mental illness and disorders today.

Let’s reduce the stigma by opening up the conversation in the classroom and at home.
As a teacher and a mom of 3, I know how important it is to be there and be a good listener.

Conversations are super important. It’s never too early (or too late) to have these conversations with your students or your own children.

Operation Conversation is a check-in on kids’ mental health. When we start simple habits of conversations, we can learn about concerns or problems our students are dealing with, help them problem solve, and build their confidence for life’s difficult moments.

Teachers can help to destigmatize mental health starting in their own classrooms by talking to their students about mental health using a free deck of conversation starter cards. Parents can also use these cards to support good conversations while at home. I know as a mom, I can use all the help I can get.

#Giveaway Alert!
I have 5 decks of Conversation Starter Decks of cards to give away to 5 lucky winners to help you get the conversation flowing!

To enter:

New York state has so many wonderful places to be New York state has so many wonderful places to be a part of . From the bright lights of NYC, to quiet places of respite in its parks and wooded areas. Time to walk, hike and reflect. Being active and busy is something that I hope my teens learn from and something we can do together to enjoy all the beauty and nature it has to offer while keeping NY tobacco free. Did you know that our oldest generation of smokers are now dying? After them, you have me and a very large group of people who do not smoke at all. So, who’s next? Instead of taking cigarettes off the shelves, the tobacco industry views today’s teens as tomorrow’s customers, using menthol-flavored products to attract and addict kids – and it’s working. More than half (54%) of youth who smoke (ages 12-17 years) use menthol cigarettes. making it easier for kids to start and harder for them to quit. Menthol is not JUST a flavor, it attracts and addicts kids As a teen mom, I am sharing this so we can all take action!
