I was not compensated for this post.

JetBlue Airways Announces Soar with Reading Initiative

in Partnership with Random House Children’s Books

Donate a book by answering a question online and enter to win prizes by Aug. 31st. Read below for all details.

soar with reading

As a teacher, when I find companies that spread the word about children and schools that are in need of books, I want to share with my readers so that those children can get the books they need.

Soar with Reading summer literacy program is partnering with bestselling author of the Magic Tree House series, Mary Pope Osborne, and Random House Children’s Books.

There is only one age-appropriate book for every 300 children in low-income neighborhoods and Soar with Reading needs the help of you and your readers to change this number!

Through August 31, Soar with Reading is asking children and parents to go to www.SoarwithReading.com and donate a book by answering, “What magical places would you like to travel to with Magic Tree House’s Jack and Annie and JetBlue this summer?” All participants who answer this question will be entered for a chance to win one of four $5,000 scholarships and other great prizes. For every submission, JetBlue will donate one book, up to $500,000 through Mary Pope Osborne’s Classroom Adventure Program.

Visit jetblue.com/SoarWithReading, which offers free downloadable resources for families including Magic Tree House Soar with Reading Passport Activity Booklets, games, interactive reading lists, expert advice for keeping kids engaged in reading all summer long, and more.

Passport booklets filled with activities will also be distributed at JetBlue terminals across the U.S. and throughout the Caribbean from June through August to encourage summer reading. Since 2011, JetBlue has donated more than $250,000 worth of books to children in need.

“Over the years, I have seen the positive impact that reading and access to books can have on a child’s life,” said Mary Pope Osborne. “I am delighted to be part of a campaign and partnership that so perfectly aligns with my mission to reach underserved children across the country with the most magical gift you can give—books.”

Research cited in The Handbook of Early Literacy Research, Volume 2 (The Guilford Press) reveals a large deficit in the U.S. in children’s access to age-appropriate books in low-income neighborhoods, where there is one book for every 300 children, compared to 13 such books per child in middle-income neighborhoods.

Visit jetblue.com/SoarwithReading for more information.

Hey Teachers – do you know about the Magic Tree House Classroom Adventures Program?

The Magic Tree House Classroom Adventures Program is a free, comprehensive set of online educational resources for teachers developed by Mary Pope Osborne as gift to teachers, to thank them for their enthusiastic support of the series. Complete with lesson plans, curriculum guides, and creative activities, the Classroom Adventures Program incorporates every book in the series, including the nonfiction Fact Tracker titles, enabling teachers to build upon students’ interest in Jack and Annie’s adventures, while simultaneously meeting core curriculum standards across a multitude of subjects. Educators can learn more at http://mthclassroomadventures.org/.

Through Soar with Reading, JetBlue and Random House Children’s Books will donate one (1) book valued at $5 per Sweepstakes entry to the Mary Pope Osborne’s Classroom Adventures Program between June 11, 2013, and August 31, 2013.  A maximum of $500,000 worth of books will be donated.  Offer void where prohibited or restricted.  Donation is not tax deductible to the consumer.

So happy to kick off the holiday season with @macy So happy to kick off the holiday season with @macys and Santa! Last night, we took the train into the city to preview #Macys #Santaland I have to say it was quite magical. Although my youngest was 12, Santa was able to connect to her and put us all in the holiday spirit.

I believe. I believe….

My mom also came with us. We started talking and I think it was almost 40 years ago that she took us to visit Santa at Macys. I was so happy to visit Santa with her and my youngest for a three generation experience.

Don’t forget to check out the beautiful window displays as you enjoy all of #NYC during the holidays!

#ad Mental health isn’t talked about enough, but #ad Mental health isn’t talked about enough, but 1 in 5 adults suffer from mental illness and disorders today.

Let’s reduce the stigma by opening up the conversation in the classroom and at home.
As a teacher and a mom of 3, I know how important it is to be there and be a good listener.

Conversations are super important. It’s never too early (or too late) to have these conversations with your students or your own children.

Operation Conversation is a check-in on kids’ mental health. When we start simple habits of conversations, we can learn about concerns or problems our students are dealing with, help them problem solve, and build their confidence for life’s difficult moments.

Teachers can help to destigmatize mental health starting in their own classrooms by talking to their students about mental health using a free deck of conversation starter cards. Parents can also use these cards to support good conversations while at home. I know as a mom, I can use all the help I can get.

#Giveaway Alert!
I have 5 decks of Conversation Starter Decks of cards to give away to 5 lucky winners to help you get the conversation flowing!

New York state has so many wonderful places to be New York state has so many wonderful places to be a part of . From the bright lights of NYC, to quiet places of respite in its parks and wooded areas. Time to walk, hike and reflect. Being active and busy is something that I hope my teens learn from and something we can do together to enjoy all the beauty and nature it has to offer while keeping NY tobacco free. Did you know that our oldest generation of smokers are now dying? After them, you have me and a very large group of people who do not smoke at all. So, who’s next? Instead of taking cigarettes off the shelves, the tobacco industry views today’s teens as tomorrow’s customers, using menthol-flavored products to attract and addict kids – and it’s working. More than half (54%) of youth who smoke (ages 12-17 years) use menthol cigarettes. making it easier for kids to start and harder for them to quit. Menthol is not JUST a flavor, it attracts and addicts kids As a teen mom, I am sharing this so we can all take action! Learn more about the impact of Big Tobacco’s manipulative tactics on our communities and how you can take action to help end this injustice.
