Pelham Bay Park had some serious damage from strong winds of Hurricane Irene.
This Labor Day Weekend, my girls and I spent some time in Pelham Bay Park. Walking, riding bikes and enjoying the playground were some of the activities on our agenda.
It was sad to see some of the devastation in the park.

From the looks of it, the tree was about 93 years old. The next day, the NYC Parks Dept. had cleared these trunks away but still had a lot to go. Middle Savvy was very sad.
Middle Savvy asked “Why did Irene get so mad?” She was very moved by this experience. I hope that we get to participate in some sort of tree planting for the park.
I was happy to see that within the three days we visited Pelham Bay Park, little by little, you could see that the Parks Dept. was cleaning up each section.
This is just one park of many NYC parks that had damage and I’m sure the city is doing the best they can to clean it up.
That is sad. Pelham Bay park is/was beautiful.
I think it’s great your children have empathy for nature, it’s a great attribute. Very sad about the trees. It looks more like a tornado hit.
It still is. It was just so sad to see the devastation. I hope they plant some more trees. Would be scary to see if a stronger hurricane came our way.
Middle Savvy does show great empathy. What a great word to describe her feelings.
That is so sad! I still can’t believe the devastation Irene brought so far to the north!
