Every parent wants their kids to read more, but getting kids interested in reading for fun isn’t always the easiest thing to do – especially during the summer break. Between family vacations, day camps, and the overall distractions of summer, it’s easy for kids to fall into the ”summer slide”’ – the common loss of skills due to being out of school.
So how can you motivate your kids to read for fun and take a “summer leap” into great books?
Answer: Go for funny!
The key is to find the kind of books that kids want to read, and it’s no surprise that kids want LOL reads. According to the Scholastic Kids & Family Reading Report™,5th Edition 70% of children ages 6-17 years old say they “want books that make me laugh.” So, let’s give them what they’re looking for! And don’t forget – let kids choose their funny reads as the Kids & Family Reading Report also shows that 91% of kids ages 6=17 says “my favorite books are the ones that I have picked out myself.”
The experts at Scholastic have gathered a list of books by age range for you to share with your children that are guaranteed to make them laugh out loud – and discover a love for reading this summer vacation.
